Tosun's Last-Minute Goal Sends Turkey to Knockouts

Soucek and Chory Confront Turkey Players at Full-Time

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) - Cenk Tosun's stoppage-time goal propelled Turkey into the knockout stage of the UEFA European Championship on Saturday, as the Crescent-Stars defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in a thrilling encounter at Hamburg's Volksparkstadion.

Substitute Tosun netted the decisive goal in the 90+4th minute, sending the Turkish bench into raptures and leaving the Czech players crestfallen. The victory marks Turkey's first win in the knockout stage of the Euros since 2008.

The match had looked set to end in a stalemate after Tomas Soucek had canceled out Burak Yilmaz's opener for Turkey. However, Tosun's late intervention shattered the Czech Republic's hopes and sparked wild celebrations among the Turkish contingent.

The result was overshadowed, however, by a heated exchange between Czech captain Tomas Soucek and substitute striker Tomas Chory with Turkish players at the final whistle. The pair remonstrated with the Turkish squad, leading to a brief melee before being separated by officials.

Turkey, who finished second in Group A behind Italy, will now face the winner of Group B in the round of 16. The Czech Republic, meanwhile, bows out of the tournament after a disappointing campaign.
